With the holidays approaching, I realized that I didn’t know all that much about the origin and history of the season’s principal holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, this article will cover the history of Thanksgiving, and the next article, the history of Christmas. After a short introduction, I will cover the history of celebrations to give thanks - from ancient times to the initial colonization of America. Next, I’ll cover the birth and evolution of America’s Thanksgiving holiday. Then I’ll discuss some of the lingering criticisms and controversies of Thanksgiving, and will conclude with a few interesting facts about our modern Thanksgiving.
