INTRODUCTION

Hello!  My name is Bob Ring and I wanted to tell you what this blog is all about.
First, a little background:  Following a challenging 35-year aerospace engineering career, in “retirement” I’ve been having fun researching and writing about Arizona History, much of it with my brother Al Ring.  Then my interests broadened beyond history to include writing about my family, travel, books, restaurants, and more.  You can find the details of the books and newspaper columns that resulted, as well as a comprehensive bio, on my website: ringbrothershistory.com, under “Bob’s Projects.”
So then, with this blog, I’m looking for a forum to share my future writing in newspaper-column/magazine-article-sized bites on all the subjects I’ve already mentioned, plus an additional one, opinion writing.  I invite your comments and feedback, directly via the blog, or to my email at  ringbob1@aol.com.

HISTORY13 - Missile Systems in Tucson

The missile systems business in Tucson can be traced back to the manufacturing of drill bits in Texas at the beginning of the last century.   In 1908 the Hughes Tool Company was established in Houston, Texas by Howard Hughes, Sr. to produce bits for oil drilling rigs.  Upon the senior Hughes death in 1924, his son Howard Hughes, Jr. took over the company and in 1932 formed Hughes Aircraft Company in Glendale, California, as a division of Hughes Tool Company.  The eccentric aviator/industrialist/movie producer moved Hughes Aircraft to nearby Burbank in 1946 and steadily expanded the company into the production of fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, electronics, and guided missiles.  By the early 1950s, Hughes Aircraft Company was one of America’s largest aerospace companies and defense contractors. HISTORY110 - Writing Tools

My hobby since my retirement as an aerospace engineer in 2000, has been “writing for fun.”  This includes history papers, newspaper columns, books, and in the last few years, a blog.  For all of these “products,” I used a computer with a word processor.  But computers and word processors are relatively recent tools for writing.  In a discussion about future blog topics the other day, Pat wondered what writers throughout history used as writing tools, and when those tools were first available.  Thus, the subject of this blog, the history of writing tools.     Introduction to Writing Tools First a definition:  Writing is the act of creating a persistent representation of human language made up of a conventional system of marks or signs.
